A small village carpet from Central Anatolia’s Konya, Sille village. Sille was historically an Anatolian Greek village, and would have been so when this carpet was woven.

Warm not-too-dense red and a tangerine-apricot orange niche ground are balanced by a very elegant dark blue medallion. A lovely blend of village and more urbane carpet styles, there are lovely folksy details in the niche. Two charming water ewers for ablutions face the person doing prayers.

Central Anatolia is a crossroads, and long has been. Seljuk-era caravanserais and mosques dot the plateaus. Konya is Rumi’s final resting place, and his tomb a pilgrimage site to this day.

Low, finer pile.
